Bighorn Mountains-Reference Photo & introduction

Welcome to Bighorn Mountains. This scene is in northern Wyoming, and in this tutorial I want to show you how the reference photograph can be a starting point rather than something you simply copy. Although the photograph is beautiful and inspiring, I chose to emphasize the warmer colors in the landscape rather than the cooler grasses, and that change had a tremendous impact on the finished painting. We’ll work through those decisions together, step by step, and see how thoughtful changes in color can strengthen a composition.
