This three-part tutorial is based on a scene Jenny and I discovered while traveling through the Bighorn Mountains of northern Wyoming. We had just finished a two-night backcountry Jeep trip and were heading home when, coming over a mountain pass, I looked back at the landscape behind us and immediately thought, “That’s a good one to paint.” We pulled over long enough for me to take several photographs, and one became the reference for this painting. I particularly liked the natural arrangement of the landscape and the strong composition it provided. If you’d like to paint along with me, a downloadable copy of the reference photograph is available inside the tutorial.
